RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
